Trayvon Martin’s Mother: “I believe it was an accident”

Mother of Trayvon Martin, Sybrina Fulton

The parents of Trayvon Martin chose to do their very first media appearance on Today. During the interview, Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton was rather empathetic quoting, “I believe it was an accident. I believe it just got out of control and [Zimmerman] couldn’t turn the clock back.” Surprised? Yeah me too. Martin’s mother went on to later retract those statements via Twitter posts by the family attorney, Benjamin Crump, saying, “The ‘accident’ I was referring to was the fact that George Zimmerman and my son ever crossed paths. It was an accidental encounter…….My son was profiled, followed, and murdered by George Zimmerman. There was nothing accidental about that.”

It’s hard to say what a mother in mourning is really thinking right now especially with all of the attention, both good and bad, that’s swirling around the tragedy. There’s a chance that she didn’t want to misrepresent her family and their character by lashing out on the Today show but an over-extended show of empathy could very well diminish chances of Zimmerman getting the justice she’s looking for. Unfortunately, there’s still very high chances that the case won’t even make it to a jury. The defense would only have to prove by a very low legal standard that Zimmerman acted in self-defense at a pre-trial hearing for the judge to dismiss the case.

What if Zimmerman doesn’t go before a jury? Should this case even go past the pre-trial? I want to know what you think…

  1. I believe that with such an overwhelming amount of evidence in this case, and that is just the one presented to the public disregarding the evidence the Prosecution has not released, this case will make it past the pre-trial and despite the fact that I’m sure not all the evidence will be admitted, I think it will be substantial enough to make it to trial. I have faith in that!

  2. I believe that the wrong charge was given to Zimmerman. They would have better chances at going to jury with a manslaughter charge rather than a 2nd degree murder charge. I was on a jury before and when there’s reasonable doubt you are to find the defendant “not guilty”. I don’t believe the proscecuter has enough to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Zimmerman killed Trayvon non- premeditatedly.

Also we must keep in mind that the state this occurred in allowed a woman to go free after killing her own 2 year old daughter. The judicial system as a whole is messed up and that’s what we should be coming together and trying to implement a change on. An arrest does not equal a conviction and that’s what everyone should remember cause this situation can happen again and we will be stuck doing the same hollering about racism and doing marches for a person to get arrested.
